Improving the Transition Home for TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY Survivors

Summary

TBI Tracker is an assistive and rehabilitative mobile application for those who have suffered a traumatic brain injury. The goal of TBI Tracker is to empower survivors to better understand their injury and facilitate their return to everyday life post-injury. The initial transition home from the hospital is the focus of the research.

Research Questions

This is an internally funded research project to better understand the following:

Can outpatient TBI rehabilitation be more effective using mobile technology?

Can mobile technology empower TBI patients?

Target Users

TBI Tracker is intended for survivors of a traumatic brain injury who have a prospective memory impairement.

Prospective Memory

The initial design and development efforts will be focused on prospective memory. Prospective memory is the ability to remember to perform a task that takes place in the future, such as remembering to take burgers off a grill or to bring a notebook to a meeting.

Self-Assessment

The initial focus will be an implementation of the PRMQ (Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire) as well as a prospective memory exercise centered around accomplishing everyday tasks for the iPad. These will allow the to see how well they are recovering.

Exercises

Our particular focus within TBI Tracker is to help patients plan out the steps to everyday tasks they want to do, including what they will need during the process and how long the different steps take so that they know when to start. Once the activity is planned out, it can be scheduled during a free slot on the person’s schedule.

Patient Empowerment

TBI Tracker should allow the patient to have a better understanding of their injury, symptoms, and progress. By doing so, it promotes patient involvement in the rehabilitation process to have better conversations with their clinicians, care team and family members about their injury.
